The Mayan Civilization

The Maya developed a great civilization in Central America before the arrival of the Europeans. The time of their highest point was reached during a period known as Classic Period, between the years 250 and 900 AD.

Living in cities that ruled themselves without a central government, the Maya created magnificent architecture and art as well as refined knowdelge of astronomy, agriculture and mathematics.

The Maya also had their own writing system which used hieroglyphs instead of letters.
