Columbus sailed on his first voyage with tree ships. He left the port city of Palos, located in southern Spain, on August 3rd, 1492.
The Ships were named "La Pinta" (the painted one), "La Niña" (the girl) and "La Santa Maria" (Saint Mary). Columbus was the captain of the Santa Maria, the largest of the tree. The other two ships were in command of the Pinzon brothers, Martin and Vicente. The sailor Rodrigo de Triana, the first one to see the American continent, was aboard the Pinta.
