
Columbus sailed on his first voyage with
tree ships. He left the port city of Palos, located in southern Spain,
on August 3rd, 1492.
The Ships were named "La Pinta" (the painted one), "La Niña" (the girl)
and "La Santa Maria" (Saint Mary). Columbus was the captain of the
Santa Maria, the largest of the tree. The other two ships were in
command of the Pinzon brothers, Martin and Vicente. The sailor Rodrigo
de Triana, the first one to see the American continent, was aboard the
Pinta.
